1. RA: The American Flag
- Focus: 13 stripes, 50 stars, red/white/blue
- Why do we fly the American Flag in our school?
- Why do we say the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag? To show respect and love for our country
- Slide number 10 shows a picture of Leo Manzano, who is a Mexican-American and won second place in the 1,500-meter dash at the London Olympics. This is a great point to stop and discuss what is means to be patriotic toward more than one county, and what it means to be a dual citizen. This slide promotes deeper thinking when posing questions like, What do you notice in this picture? Can you be patriotic to more than one county? Why or why not? Which country won this race/got the medal?
- The Final slide in this slideshow shows a variety of flag from the countries represented by the students in my class. This serves as a great visual resource for students as they create the flag from their home country, and as a discussion point when comparing and contrasting different flags from around the world.
3. Create flags: American Flag and Home Country Flag.
- American Flag slideshow (see link above) includes a final slide with the flags of all the kids home countries from our class. Use the information gathered from the Homework WS to know which flags to include.
- When kids are finished, take their picture holding both their flags.
- A group pictures with all students holding each flag is a great way to end the unit and display in the classroom!
5. Circle Share: Students share their home country flag
- "museum walk" and then share out with class
- Guiding questions: What things do you notice are the same among these flags? What symbols do you see in the flags? What do you notice is different?
