Objective: SWBAT define tradition and give an example of a patriotic tradition
VA STANDARD 1.11
The student will recognize the symbols and traditional practices that honor and foster patriotism in the United States by
a) identifying the American flag, bald eagle, Washington Monument, and Statue of Liberty;
b) demonstrating respect for the American flag by learning about the Pledge of Allegiance.

Exit Ticket. Can students 1) identify traditions and 2) differentiate between patriotic and non-patriotic traditions?
Differentiation
Tradition WS is differentiated by choice and readiness. The assignment is scaffolded because we are generating a list of traditions as a class, and then students are working independently.

Essential Knowledge
- The United States has patriotic symbols and traditions.
- Patriotic symbols and traditions honor the people and the history of the United States.
- A tradition is a custom of belief that happens over a long period of time. A tradition is the way of doing things passed down from parents to kids. (Ex: birthday cake and candles to celebrate a birthday, Evergreen tree on Christmas, candles in the winter, pizza on Friday nights)

Procedures
1. What is a tradition?
- Give examples and non-example using posters - classify each of the traditions as patriotic or not patriotic and why.
- Discuss: What is a patriotic tradition?
- Generate a list on the board of traditions (student and teacher generated)
- Draw a picture of you and your family celebrating a tradition. Is this tradition patriotic? (does it show love and respect for your country?)
3. Exit Ticket/WS: Circle the Patriotic Traditions (assessment)
- Circle the holidays that show patriotic traditions.
5. Read Aloud: The Pledge of Allegiance
- It is a tradition to say the Pledge of Allegiance to show respect to our country.
6. Pledge of Allegiance WS
- students color the worksheet and practice reciting it. WS can go into kids' poetry folder when completed.
Assessment
