Procedures
1. Read Aloud: Emma's Poem and Scholastic News
- contrast nonfiction and realistic fiction
2. Virtual Field Trip to the Statue of Liberty
- Use Google Earth to show students geography of the Statue of Liberty
- Crown Cam/Torch Cam
- draw a picture of the Statue of Liberty to go along with the poem
- Kids can practice reciting the poem in their table groups
- Invite students to recite the poem to the class
- Extension: use the poem in guided reading to practice fluency and videotape/record students reciting the poem, alternating versus in their small group.
4. Review patriotic symbols and traditions.
- How can we be Patriotic? (show that we are proud of and respect our country)
- generate a list as a class and display for students to see as they complete their own assessment
